The first thing you want to do is check your fluid while your car is running.  There’s just one exception, which is that if you have a Honda you should run the engine or drive it, but then shut off before checking. 

Next, set the transmission to PARK.  There is one exception – any Dodge vehicle which should be set in neutral with the “E” brake set.

Okay…now…do you know where the dipstick is?  The one for the TRANSMISSION FLUID…NOT THE OIL?  If so, go ahead and pull it out!  If not, consult your owners manual to determine the location. 

 Next you’ll want to grab a rag that is okay to get dirty, and clean the dipstick off. 

Your next step is to reinsert the dipstick completely, then pull it back out to check the reading.

Okay pay attention this is important…now REPEAT what you just did and make sure the reading is the same! 

NOTE:  Make sure the dipstick is displaying the same reading on each side of the dipstick.  The reason to do this is that when the fluid flows back into the pan where the dipstick is taking it’s measurement, sometimes it sloshes around and causes the reading to be higher on one side.  So, if the two sides show different readings, you’ll want to repeat the pull-wipe-reinsert process until they are the same. 

Some other things that are good to know: 

• Have you newly added transmission fluid?  If so, you’ll want to repeat the process to check several times before you really trust the reading you’re getting.  What can sometimes happen is that fluid will cling to the side of the filler tube and alter the reading.
• Again….HEY!  Paying attention?  This is CRITICAL.  If the level is low, then you have a leak my friend!  Transmissions do not eat transmission fluid for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner.  Seriously, it’s not “burned away” or anything like that during operation.  If some is missing, it fell out of the system somewhere!  Now, most significantly…if this is the case…TAKE IT IN to a qualified transmission repair shop and have it evaluated and the leak fixed.  A $200 leak fix could easily become a $2000 major repair if not tended to.
